Diabetes Complication Project: Ensuring early diagnosis and management of diabetes and its complication in six urban underprivileged areas
Ensuring early diagnosis and management of Diabetes and Diabetes Complications (Diabetic Retinopathy) in six slums in Delhi NCR, India using Mobile van” Diabetes Rath” or Diabetes Care on Wheels”
Women’s awareness initiative on the prevention of diabetes (GDM/T2DM) and its risks (e.g. overweight or obesity)
The project intended to raise awareness among women in slums regarding nutrition, obesity, physical activity, T2DM/GDM and its risks specifically among women, frontline workers, and local registered medical practitioners (RMPs). Series of awareness sessions and health camps were held for the women from the community in 10 slums areas in Delhi covering about 1.5 lakh underprivileged women in awareness sessions. Training and sensitization sessions were organised for health workers and RMPs. Around 9600 women received services regarding gestational diabetes management through referrals. Talks, lectures, and pamphlets having detailed information regarding nutrition, overweight, obesity, physical activity, T2DM/GDM and its risks and the prevention were distributed. 450 health workers and 50 RMPs will be trained. Change in knowledge will be assessed through pre-post KAP surveys.
"Diabetes care at door steps, a diabetes care programme for underprivileged population in Delhi"
Diabetes Foundation India (DFI) implemented “Diabetes Care at Doorsteps” known as “Diabetes Rath” with an objective to provide locally implemented screening, standard care, management, and prevention advice of diabetes for the underprivileged population of Delhi spread in 10 different locations in Delhi. The project covered about 3 lacs population from 10 different slums in all four districts of Delhi for creating awareness about diabetes, obesity, lipid disorders, retinopathies, foot ulcers and other co-morbidities. It aimed to provide facilities for early detection of diabetes and co-morbidities. Diabetes Rath program had two specialised mobile van with testing facilities such as Anthropometric, Random blood sugar, Vibration Perception Test (VPT), Ankle Brachial Index (ABI), ECG, Retinoscopy or Fundus, Blood pressure. This provided a standard management of diabetes in customised Diabetes Mobile Unit where retinal images are being sent to tertiary care for further management as part of linkages with tertiary care. The project helped in increasing awareness and ensuring early detection of diabetes and its co-morbidities including foot ulcers, renal failure, heart attacks, blindness and stroke. Standard counselling, nutritional and lifestyle advice that helped in prevention of these diseases. Main highlights
- The project has covered about 2,52,300 population with 260 mass awareness sessions.
- About 2110 people were identified having pre-diabetic conditions.
- About 8,215 people were identified with diabetes.
- Provided counselling to about 82,500 people with main focus on lifestyle education.
- About 140 volunteers are trained on issues of diabetes and complications.
- About 300 local and tertiary health providers oriented on diabetes related issues.
Project "DiSHAA" (Diabetes and Obesity Awareness for Children/Adolescents and Adults) in 500 schools across 50 cities of India
(Funded by Emcure Pharmaceuticals Limited Pune, 2013 to 2014). This project aimed to create widespread awareness and knowledge about diabetes care and prevention among the general public and school children. With the collaboration of local healthcare professionals, nutritionists, and community members, we reached a remarkable 1 lakh population across 500 schools in various cities of India.
"Health and Nutrition Intervention among children and their parents in 3 schools of Rajganpur, Orissa”
(Funded by Orissa Cement Ltd, 2012 to 2014). This project aimed to improve lifestyle and food habits among students and their parents. Thanks to the support of various stakeholders, including students, teachers, volunteers, and sponsors like your esteemed organization, we were able to enhance the nutritional status of teachers, students, and parents, while also raising diabetes awareness among 5000 school children and their parents.
“MARG” or “The Path” was designed to create awareness about diabetes, obesity and heart disease among children and adolescents
(Supported by World Diabetes Foundation, Denmark, 2006 to 2008). This project was implemented in 8 cities namely; New Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Allahabad, Mumbai, Pant Nagar, Dehradun and Lucknow. The project covered 92 schools and sensitized about 94,430 people (school children, their parents, and school teachers) regarding healthy lifestyles and the prevention of diabetes.

The pre-post intensive lifestyle counselling for diabetic patients (overweight/obese) showed a significant lowering in weight.
